ACT “Math” Preparation

Brief Course Description:  

This course helps the students to prepare for their ACT/SAT exams, which are essential for college applications throughout QF universities and abroad. All students must score well in these exams in order to get accepted at one of the universities.

Course Goals

Students who complete this course will be able to:

AS Level Biology

Course Location: Education City, ABP Penrose House “LAS building”, Science Lab C029

Brief Course Description:

The classes will cover the core content plus relevant practical demonstrations and actual practical work by the students for 2 of the topics taught in an AS Biology course:

It will include practical techniques using a wide range of experimental and practical instruments, equipment, and techniques. Students will have an opportunity to do practical work, plot and interpret graphs, process and analyze data and complete past exam papers.

Course Goals

Students who complete this course will be able to:

  • Show a greater understanding and mastery of the subject knowledge.
  • Demonstrate a greater skill in applying the scientific method, data analysis, evaluation, and concluding.
  • Gain a greater understanding of the knowledge and practical techniques required for Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3 of the AS Level course.
  • Apply that knowledge and their skills in practical techniques to completing Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3 of the AS Level course.

Topics to be covered:

Biological molecules. This topic introduces carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins,  emphasizing the relationship between molecular structures and their functions. It also includes the properties and role of water in biological systems. There will be practical demonstrations and students will complete some laboratory work, in addition to completing practice questions on past exam papers 1, 2, and practical paper 3.
Cell structure and function. This topic includes the role and use of microscopes in cell studies, with students completing some practical work on preparations of cellular material and calculating magnifications of images and actual sizes of specimens from drawings, photomicrographs, and electron micrographs (scanning and transmission). The cellular structures of a prokaryotic cell and eukaryotic cells as found in plants and animals are studied and compared, while viruses are introduced as non-cellular structures.
Manipulation of  numerical and other data, data  analysis, evaluation, and drawing conclusions will also be included.

In this course, you will learn the basics of macOS Big Sur, the latest operating system for your Mac. Discover and learn to use popular apps included on your Mac like Preview, QuickTime Player, Screenshot, and more. Secure your Mac without needing to understand complicated computer techniques. Learn to create documents using Pages with a more custom design, like newsletters or posters. Using Numbers, learn to create organized, professional-looking spreadsheets. Brief Course Description:

Having a clear understanding of the university admissions process is one of the key elements that students and their families must know and navigate when thinking about going to college. This introductory course will cover the vital topics related to the application, search, and university selection process so that students can be certain to understand what is needed to apply.

Course Goals

Students who complete this course will be able to:

  • Have an understanding of who they are and what they are looking for in a university
  • Be able to identify the key filters in the selection of a university
  • Know the parts of university applications
  • Develop an activities list, cv/resume that can be submitted with an application
  • Have a clear understanding of their application choice(s) and its corresponding selectivity level (reach school, target school, or safety school)
  • Have identified 3-5+ universities to which they intend to apply
  • Know the parts and deadlines of each university application

IELTS Preparation

Course Location: Education City, ABP Penrose House “LAS building”, Classroom B005

Brief Course Description:

This IELTS course is aimed at students who wish to prepare for the internationally recognized IELTS examination and have little or no experience in it. The lessons explore the necessary skills and techniques to improve all aspects of the student’s English speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The course also covers sub-skills such as academic vocabulary, grammar, and style but focuses on strategies to approach the different IELTS tasks accurately and efficiently.

Course Goals

Students who complete this course will be able to:

  • Recognize and overcome challenges presented in the IELTS exam, when approaching a task
  • Understand the mechanics of the IELTS exam such as formatting, question order, and time given to complete each paper

Speaking

  • Understand what is required in all 3 parts of the exam
  • Feel more confident when answering questions

Reading

  • Better understand a variety of academic texts
  • Skim and scan for specific information in the texts
  • Identify the different parts of a text
  • Use several strategies to approach the questions in the Reading paper
